Earl is strange.  He can’t help it.  He’s short and oddly proportioned and has a weird father and he lives in a little brown house in the middle of the countryside.  But from the moment Finny meets him, he’s open with her.  He isn't afraid to tell her exactly how he feels.  This is an entirely new experience for Finny, being loved in this way.

Earl also has his shortcomings.  He’s a little too giving of his feelings, and that causes Finny to question his character and judgment at times.  He’s an astoundingly loyal son, but that loyalty leads him to make some questionable choices, sending him off to Paris and an artist’s life when Finny needs him most.
